In April this year we enjoyed lunch at The Oxford Scholar Hotel, located a just a few minutes walk from Melbourne Central Station and right across the road from RMIT University, the historic Oxford Scholar building dates back to 1887.
Thanks to the hospitality provided by Mal Wulf and friendly staff. For the afternoon our special guest speaker was Mark Richards recognised as one of Australia’s pre-eminent ocean yachtsmen. He has held a passion for boating from the days of youthful adventures to the open sea.
Mark has skippered Bob Oatley’s Wild Oats XI to 7 line honour victories in the Sydney to Hobart Yacht Race. Since 2005 the name Wild Oats and Mark Richards have become synonymous with the famous race, one of the world’s most challenging and gruelling ocean racing contests.
Wild Oats XI has claimed the rarely achieved “Triple Crown”‘ – Line Honours, First on Handicap and the Race Record twice in 2005 and in 2012. His many credits include being a winning crewmember in the 1984 America’s Cup World Championship helmsman on Wild Oats X winning the Admiral’s Cup in England in 2003 and countless Australian and International yachting events.
