The Metropolitan Hotel, North Melbourne

The August publican’s lunch was held at The Metropolitan Hotel in North Melbourne. Built in 1874, the historic heritage-listed hotel is recognised as one of Melbourne’s finest gastropubs. Our hosts Geoff Marshall & Steve Bassett at the Metropolitan Hotel put on a splendid meal.

The guest speaker at the lunch was the inspirational Brad Hardie a former Aussie rules footballer who represented Footscray, Brisbane Bears, and Collingwood in the AFL as well as South Fremantle in the WAFL.

Brad Hardie is perhaps best remembered for being one of the game’s most decorated players winning a Brownlow Medal, the Simpson Medal and two Tassie Medals.

Doubts we expressed by some locals whether Brad would make it in Victoria because of a lack of speed, but he had tremendous judgement and could place his solid frame in position to win the ball consistently. He emphasised his talent by winning the Brownlow in his first year while playing for Footscray, which was a tribute to his attacking style from the back pocket.
